An automatic license plate reader (ALPR) photographs your plate as you drive past, logs the time and location, and stores it in a searchable database, whether or not you've done anything wrong. There are an estimated 80,000 to 100,000+ of these cameras across the U.S. The data can be retained for months or years and shared across hundreds of agencies, sometimes without a city's knowledge or consent. The encouraging part: it's being pushed back on. Since the start of 2025, 150+ local governments have canceled or declined to renew ALPR contracts. That happened because people learned where the cameras were and organized. Check the map to see what's deployed near you, then use the feed to connect with others taking action.
